Synopsis

The mayor of small New England island ignores the superstitious residents till strange things start happening to him and the people around him as he tries to revitalize Widow's Bay.

Acting

I think Matthew Rhys plays the dopey Mayor Tom Loftis well. Kate O'Flynn is great at being Patricia, the goofy and loyal assistant to the mayor. Stephen Root is hilarious as every as Wyck, a superstitious townie. And Dale Dickey is a hoot playing Rosemary, the nonchalant mayor's office worker. The rest of the cast were great in their roles too.

Directing & Writing

Even though the show seemed slow at times I understood it was its weird way of building up the suspense. But once the action started, I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see where it would go next. It felt like every episode was a cliffhanger.

I do have my questions about how people react on the island. I cant tell if it is how they are suppose to be written or if its bad writing. There is a point where someone finds out something big and yells scaring everyone. But then they never explain to anyone what they found and it seems to get forgotten that they even yelled in the first place. Maybe it will get explained later.

Costume Design & Makeup

The cast was done up well. I feel everyone looked appropriate for their character. Didn't catch any out of place zippers and the prosthetics work was good. Some of the horror makeup looked campy but that's part of the show's charm.

Set Design & Filming Location

The locations for filming captured the feeling of being on a small remote island. Homes, businesses, and other buildings worked well to keep the charm of a New England town. Not once did I feel like a location was out of place.

Music, Sound, & Lighting

Satisfactory. Don't have any notes on these.

SFX & CGI

Also satisfactory. I don't have any complaints about the special effects or the computer generated imagery on the show.

Nerdy Take

Widow's Bay for me was a challenge to watch but the odd bits I caught kept me wanting more. The strangeness of the island made it feel like it was stuck in the 90s but obviously the rest of the world had moved on and it's Mayor wants to too. But can the town survive it? I eagerly await to see what befalls Widow's Bay next in season 2.
